2006 NFC North Preview
In the second part of his eight games in 2006 NFL draft, Sports handicapper Dwayne Bryant provides his thoughts and predictions on the NFC North division. Teams are listed in order of their arrival.
1. Chicago Bears
Offense: The Bears run first attack will be led by riders Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson. The duo has to share the season last and this season will probably start the same way. Look for Benson to become the featured back in sometime this season. The Bears have not used a first-round choice in Benson just have to share carries. The quarterback in this offense, if Rex Grossman (more likely), Kyle Orton or Brian Griese of again thanks for the watch only at a ball control attack and a suffocating defense. Chicago has a young group of trays help to go with Muhsin Muhammad. Justin Gage, Mark Bradley and Bernard Berrian a challenge for the # 2 WR. Chicago averaged only 256.3 meters and 16.3 points per game last season. Do not expect much in 2006.
Defendant: Chicago Force indisputable is his defense. This unit allowed only 12.6 points per game last season – tops in the league. Only CB Jerry Azumah (retired) and S Mike Green (trade) have disappeared from the latter group of years. CB Ricky Manning has been introduced by commerce (Panthers) to fill the void left by Azumah's absence. In 2005, the Bears D has ranked second in yards allowed, tied for second in interceptions, sixth in total steals and tied in eighth place in bags. The Bears do an excellent job of running the pin, led by ends Alex Brown and Adewale Ogunleye. DT Tommie Harris also refers to the area East. MLB Brian Urlacher takes a talented LB corps. The secondary characteristics, Mike Brown, Charles Tillman and Nathan Vasher. This group had 16 interceptions and returning three for touchdowns last season.
Special Teams: This unit needs an update. Kicker Robbie Gould connected on only 3 of 8 attempts from FG from 40 yards out. The team performance leaves much to be desired. Speedy Bernard Berrian showed May and a promise to give this unit a boost.
Prediction: Bears, thanks to a smothering defense and successful running game should run away with this division in 2006.
2. MINNESOTA VIKINGS
Offense: New head coach Brad Childress will install the version of the West Coast offense. This QB Brad Johnson should be fine. Johnson has no arms, but has an accurate arm to the short and medium shots. Receivers Koren Robinson, Travis Taylor and Troy Williamson should thrive in this system. Look for TE Jermaine Wiggins have another solid season. The key to this offense is if RB Chester Taylor can carry the load. Taylor did well in all situations with the Ravens and the luxury of playing behind a solid offensive line doped guard Steve Hutchinson. Taylor, who is also a solid receiving threats, FB Tony Richardson have also opened lanes to run it. N Culpepper and foam, but the offense still has much potential.
Defense: Like many others, Minnesota, to the ever changing popular program Cover 2. The switch is a good omen for this unit. The Vikes have two ends quickly Zhogorku Udeze and Erasmus James, who can create all sorts of havoc. You rookie Chad Greenway OLB for the get-go and have an immediate impact. The strength of this unit appears to be the secondary, led by Fred Smoot and Antoine Winfield corners. It is a defense fast should do a lot of big plays this season. Normally, the transition to a new regime takes time before the improvement is visible. In this case, no But Minnesota has the talent to run it from the beginning.
Special teams: Mewelde Moore proved solid kick returner, averaged 11.7 yards per return (third in the league) and had a return TD. Koren Robinson is the fifth league with an average of 26 by the court of a kickoff return and also had at home. The Vikings at the level of this unit by the addition of kicker Ryan Longwell. Longwell has a 81.6 FG percentage and his career should find the Metrodome a much easier to put the Lambeau Field.
Prediction: An improved defense, solid special teams play and an offense with many potential Minnesota places second in the NFC North.
3. Detroit Lions
Offense: No offense is more interesting than this. The arrival of offensive guru Mike Martz as offensive coordinator in Detroit offers great optimism. The characteristics of the Lions' offense on several former top draft pick, including Kevin Jones, Roy Williams, Mike Williams and Charles Rogers. One thing here is not Martz in St. Louis are great receivers. Williams, Williams and Rogers are all major objectives of the red zone. Two issues there. First, can Jon Kitna or Josh McCown running the offense effectively? And secondly, can this offensive line protect what is at the center? I have my doubts as to question one and the same doubts about the second question.
Defense: The Lions are other conversion equipment to the defense of the 2 Cover. New head coach Rod Marinelli is a defensive spirit coach who will seek an improvement in this group. New Coordinator defensive Donnie Henderson is known for being aggressive bombing and coverage. He wants to see more pressure on its front four group generated in 2005. First round Ernie Sims teams Boss Bailey and Teddy Lehman trio to form the starting LB. This defense forced 31 turnovers and had 3 defensive touchdowns last season, so the talent is there. Expect to see the sack total increase. They will improve the 127.5 yards allowed per game in 2005.
Special Teams: Eddie Drummond re-form his 2004 (4 Return TDs). It was mediocre at best last season. Jason Hanson is a consistent kicker that should see its potential to increase the score in 2006.
Prediction: Detroit is a team on the rise and can be dangerous if the new offensive and defensive systems are effective, sooner rather than later. Want to one slow start, but a strong second half of the season for the Lions.
4. GREEN BAY PACKERS
Crime: Injury absolutely decimated this group in 2005. The Pack lost their # 1 WR, Javon Walker, in the first game of the season. They lost their replacement (Robert Ferguson), too. They played their chain OR fourth and fifth at various points of the season and his third string TE. Brett Favre is the quarterback who was, but not as bad as it looked last season. Protection Favre is a concern. Green Bay also needs a WR to develop and pull the blanket from him. With Ahman Green and Najeh Davenport for injury-prone back Samkon Gado intervene and take over the RB duties. With questions literally every position, this unit is not fair much better than the injury riddled 2005 version.
Defense: There are very few modifications to this unit. Ryan Pickett is responsible for resolving. AJ Hawk First round moves in a placeholder LB. CB Charles Woodson and S Marquand Manuel has been introduced to improve the secondary. Another rookie, LB Abdul Hodge, could find their way into the starting lineup. The Pack have added some moves and still book ends Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila and Aaron Kampman to opposition pressure quarterbacks. Improvement occurred in May 2006, but it usually takes a time when they are involved many changes. This group should freeze in the second half of the season.
Special Teams: There is nothing to write at home here. Kickoff packing equipment for return to the last in the league in 2006 and punt return unit has been average, better. Kicker Ryan Longwell, Packers top scorer of all time took the money and ran to the division rival Minnesota. Cowboys do not throw-off of Billy Cundiff or 2005 Colts pick the sixth assault, Dave Rayner. Ouch.
Forecast: Last Viva Favre will not be good. A new coaching staff, plenty of questions on offense, too many changes on defense and the loss of a solid kicker leave Green Bay at the bottom of this new division.
Final Thoughts: The Bears are the class of that division. Each of their division rivals must pass through the associated transition to new management. Chicago should be able to separate the package from the start, but look for Minnesota and Detroit have a strong second half of the season.
