Anyone know of a good history of comics in the 1990′s?
I’m rereading the entire X-men line of comics from the 1990′s (started in the 60′s, even), and got nostalgic for how weird of a time the 90′s were for comics. I was only in grade school when most of the turnovers happened (Marvel to Image basically), and while I have a pretty general understanding of how everything came to be, I was wondering if there’s any resource out there that pretty comprehensively chronicles the change in industry, art style, story direction, personalities, of comics in the 90′s, especially with regards to X-Men (but not necessarily).
I’m most interested in how the hell Rob Liefeld, Jim Lee, and Whilce Portacio (among others) managed to get themselves in a position where these rookies could call shots over folks like Chris Claremont, and then suddenly jump ship just a year later.
Yes actually! There’s a book called The Dark Ages which is all about the late 80s/early 90s trend in comics focusing on gimmick and spectacle, the emergence of grim and gritty heroes like Spawn, Cable, etc., and the begining of Image.
